The Thuringian Mountain Railway was opened in 1923 and has been heritage-listed since 1980. The cable railway is 1.4km long and features a 25% gradient slope from the Valley Station Obstfelderschmiede to Lichtenhain. A 2.5km-long flat section from Lichtenhain to Cursdorf is electrified with 600 V DC.

Marvel at the fascinating engineering techniques while enjoying an impressive panoramic view of Thuringia’s forests. Trained personnel provide an interesting commentary on the history and characteristic features of the railway. In summer months and in good weather, an open-top “convertible” goods wagon is set onto the tracks, a special highlight.

Throughout the year, a wide variety of events are held at the Thuringian Mountain Railway and Schwarzatal Funicular Railway. Whether the opening of the “convertible season”, the annual Mountain Railway festival, Summer Festival or Advent celebrations, the cable car is a visitor magnet for both young and old.
