The history of the local region is presented clearly and accurately at the “Nature House” in Goldisthal, from gold mines to charcoal burners to the use of water for mills and today’s hydropower schemes. The unique properties belonging to the hunting grounds of the Schwarzburg princes, with their hunting cabins on the Wurzelberg, are also on display.

The central theme of the exhibition is the forest, which is presented in an exciting and stimulating way. Grounded in science, but easy-to-understand for both young and old, the exhibition provides a very special forest experience.

The exhibition is housed in a three-storey half-timbered building that dates from the 18th Century. Formerly a restaurant “Zum fröhlichen Mann”, the building has been lovingly restored and operates well in its new function of bringing nature closer to the people. The exhibition in the Nature House is child-friendly and topics such as conservation are introduced via games.

A wide selection of resources brings the Nature House to life, with a range of games, listening posts with regional sayings, videos and animations available.

The exhibition however is only an introduction to nature, which can be directly experienced in the Thuringia Forest. Goldisthal, which lies in the Schwarzatal, is surrounded by beauty on all sides.

Tired from all these new experiences? Then refresh yourself in the new café! Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee in a pleasant atmosphere dating from the 18th Century. And of course, who couldn’t sell beer in a former brewery? Snacks and light meals are also available, with something suitable for every treasure hunter and adventurer.
